OpenOrienteeringMap Training
Today’s club training was held in the heart of Rīga with the start and the finish just beside the Freedom Monument. It was a sprint training with a very special OpenOrienteeringMap. And turned out to be just perfect for a bit longer sprint orienteering session across the central city parks, especially at the time, when the snow is over 60 cm deep in the forest. Unfortunately only few used this opportunity to run a set-up course on this completely unique map. Anyway, I had a lot of fun thanks to the nice sunny weather and the organizer of the training Kalvis Brūns. My map with the GPS route can be found here. Tomorrow I am organizing a night training in Mežaparks with its deep snow drifts.

The map doesn’t look that great, though – compared to a regular orienteering map. But a very nice way to get some orienteering-feeling in areas which are not properly mapped with an orienteering map. I think running on contours from laser-scanning might be even more fun – like http://omaps.worldofo.com/index.php?id=16687.

A year ago or two I ran on contour only laser-scanning map. If I remember right the height difference was only 25 cm, which made it looks more than interesting. In fact, it was my home map, which I train on almost on daily basis, and I could hardly recognize the terrain.
